First Fruits

In case you are wondering what is going on with the garden, it is still alive. While that isn’t an enthusiastic description, I am comfortable with this level of achievment. The weather has been pretty much idealic, aside from the latest heat wave. I’ve had mild critter attack of the zuchini by way of slugs. The tomatoe plants are lightly covered with spiders, but hopefully they are helpers. Supposedly, spiders don’t like tomatoe leaves but they don’t seem to mind my plants.

I have picked a very small amount of green beans but it doesn’t appear the small bush will produce any more. There a few more healthy-enough looking zuchini growing and today, I picked the first good looking vegetable. I don’t want to claim the actual first zuchini I picked because it is so funny looking and I think I picked it too early. This cucumber was hiding under a couple of leaves and it really surprised me because it is so fat and yet still prickly. I wasn’t sure if I was suppose to pick it yet but I wanted to taste it. The prickly parts just rub off.

The flavor of the cucumber is very delicious and the skin is so wonderfully edible. I am going to have a hard time going back to store cucumbers.
